Healing relational trauma through music

What is this training about?

This workshop is for early childhood educators and other professionals working with children 0-5 years. The focus is on the importance of music and musical experiences with all children, but in particular children affected by relational trauma.

This training session explores:

  • The science and research which suggests music experiences are essential to support early childhood development, including brain development
  • How music experiences can be a non-threatening medium for expressing emotions and support healing from trauma
  • How music can stimulate the brain’s reward pathways, providing a sense of pleasure and relief from traumatic stress

What will you learn?

By attending this workshop participants will be able to consider how healing can be supported by:

  • Music-making is a natural part of children’s general play that ignites all areas of their development, including literacy and numeracy skills, emotional intelligence and social development
  • Music is processed directly by the amygdala, the part of the brain involved in mood and emotions
  • Playing musical instruments, movement and singing has a number of therapeutic benefits to support trauma-affected children
  • Music can express emotions not otherwise easily communicated

What difference will this make to your practice?

Participants will gain skills and knowledge to understand the importance and role of:

  • Music will boost and enhance your relationship with the child
  • Children’s self-confidence will be supported by engaging in music
  • Offering enjoyable musical opportunities for children to practice self-regulation skills with your encouragement
  • You will be promoting the reawakening of feelings of pleasure and engagement that have been dulled by trauma exposure

This will support you in your work with children with relational trauma by exploring practical ideas you can start to implement immediately.
