Trauma transformative practice with families
Exploring recently developed key concepts and practice implications in trauma transformative work with families.
What is this workshop about?
Complex interpersonal trauma has a significant impact on children, families and their relationships. Families who care for children and/or family members who have experienced trauma may face significant difficulties in experiencing safe relational exchanges and communication. These relational ruptures are adaptive responses to trauma and require an understanding of the unique family experiences and system in which they have emerged.
The broader impact of this trauma has implications for how carers, practitioners, programs, and systems support families. Relational concepts, including compassionate awareness and playful attunement, are key components in healing for families.
This workshop introduces the trauma transformative paradigm as a way to inform our practice with families. It will share and apply knowledge and dimensions described in The Handbook of Trauma Transformative Practice (Tucci, Mitchell, Porges, Tronik 2024).
The training will adapt this knowledge to develop approaches and contextualise strategies for working with families whose relationships and connections are impacted by trauma. It is aimed at professionals working with families, including Child Protection practitioners, Mental health and allied health professionals, Educators and early-learning staff, Family Support Services, and Out-of-home care staff.
Learning outcomes
By attending this workshop you will:
- Review an understanding of the impacts of trauma on children and their relationships within families.
- Be supported to develop a trauma transformative approach and contextualise practice strategies for families, and the systems that support them.
- Consider a key practice approach, the Realising Deep Safety Model, as a way that healing and the restoration of safety are explored within families. This sequenced intervention model aims to nurture and embed resonant experiences and resources of connection within families, their communities and the systems around them.
What difference will this make to your practice?
This workshop will support you to consider this transformational knowledge base as it applies to working with children and the community of relationships around them. Your understanding of this will be enhanced by the opportunity to apply this and a specific relational framework to your practice.
Having completed the workshop, you will feel more confident in your practice when working with children and their families and the systems around them.
