Understanding Relational Trauma in the Early Years
Understand the impact of relational trauma on young children and their families.
What is this workshop about?
This workshop will benefit all practitioners working with children aged 0-5. Practitioners can begin to understand what relational trauma is and its impact on young children and their families and increase their knowledge, skills and responses. Understanding vicarious trauma and its impact on practitioners and how to look after themselves is important information for all those working with children affected by trauma.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Build awareness of vicarious trauma and strategies to address the need for self-care when working with traumatised children.
- Develop responses and build capacity of/within the service to identify and respond supportively to those staff experiencing vicarious trauma.
- Have a better understanding of the context of relational trauma for families – brain development and impact of trauma on the child’s brain.
- Enhance ability to use relationships between practitioners and traumatised children as vehicles for change.
- Know how to build meaningful and non-judgemental relationships with families.
What difference will this make to your practice?
Practitioners will be better able to recognise vicarious trauma in themselves and their colleagues enabling a more nurturing and caring workforce. Practitioners will feel more confident and competent in their relationships with children and their families affected by relational trauma.
