Making SPACE for Learning

Build your knowledge and confidence about neuroscience evidence and its application to the use of trauma sensitive principles and strategies in education environments.

The Australian Childhood Foundation has been working with schools across Australia for the past fifteen years with the aim of enhancing trauma sensitive practices for children and young people.  This work has enhanced the capacity of schools to meet the needs of children and young people who have experienced trauma, significant disruption and disadvantage.  Effectively meeting the needs of these students requires an understanding of the impact of their traumatic experiences on their emotional, psychological and behavioural functioning, which in turn impacts on their ability to learn and manage social relationships within the school environment.

This one day workshop provides an overview of the Making SPACE for Learning program and incorporates professional learning in the following areas:
  • The neurobiology and neurophysiology of complex relational and developmental trauma
  • How trauma impacts children and young people’s brain, body, memory, emotions, relationships, behaviour and capacity to learn
  • Responding to traumatised children and young people in the school setting
  • Exploring activities and strategies that can help heal the impacts of trauma to allow for improved behavioural and cognitive capacity for the children
All training sessions delivered by the Australian Childhood Foundation are facilitated by members of our Therapeutic Services and Professional Education Services teams.  These staff members are qualified and experienced professionals who are engaging in trauma informed practice with children, young people and families across Australia.  Training team members draw on their practice wisdom and current experiences to contextualise the training content to practice challenges and successes.  They are able to link the theory and research to the therapeutic reach of the organisation’s programs throughout each training program.
